As the moderator of this site, I would like to address the concern which some people like s con (comment #2) have expressed with the question: Is this a get rich slow scheme? I here pledge in writing that the collection will never be cashed in or sold, as the collection is not mine to sell. It is collectively owned by everybody who has contributed to it. It can only remain publicly owned, however, if nobody cashes it in.

hehe.. it's a not-so-known fact that pennies minted in 1968 (and years prior) are made of copper (expensive), while 1969 and years following are made of a nickel-zinc alloy (cheap).

with the prices of copper on global markets steadily rising, scrap copper has become something of a commodity. a penny, by weight, is worth more than one us cent :)

don't be surprised if one day this nostalgic collection of pennies gets melted down for good cash..

You should take them to Coinstar and use the money to buy some t-shirts, and maybe a slice of pizza and a medium soda if you have enough after the t-shirts.
No, on second thought you should skip Coinstar and just pay for the t-shirts and food all in pennies.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

With copper prices 200% higher than ever, we can we expect these pennies to be melted? This is a scheme, so dont send anything to this person. What a crook. Get a job.

10:56 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

In regards to the comment left at 2:27PM you are correct! It takes approximately $1.58 to equal a pound of copper, at the time I wrote this the current tally was at 6,728 divided by 158 equals 43 pounds the current rate of copper is about $3.63 a pound scrap and is speculated to continue climbing. at the current rate these coin scrap have a value of approximately $156.00 not the $67.28 collected.

For those of you suggesting that I am building this collection in order to cash in on its copper content, I repeat that I will NEVER sell, melt, or trade in this collection. I would never betray the trust of all the kind folks who have so generously dontated to this endeavor. I like to think of the collection as a collaborative conceptual art piece and all contributors as co-artists. For me, the collection's artistic value is greater than its monetary value.

There is a bit of wrong info here. Someone said that 1968 was the last year that pennies were made of copper. 1982 was the transition from copper to zinc. All Lincoln Cents, except the 1943 steel "War Pennies" were primarily copper through 1981. Sometime in 1982 the alloy was changed from copper to zinc. All Lincoln Cents minted after 1982 are primarily zinc. Good luck with your collection. I'll keep my 1968 pennies as well as other coins for my own collection, and I'm not picky about the date or denomination. My dad always told me "Save your money, someday it might be worth something".

I'll *SELL* you my pennies.

Actually, it's 1981 pennies or earlier that are mostly copper. In 1982, there were some made of copper, some clad (copper skin on a zinc core) It is pretty difficult to tell them apart by looking at them. The exception is the 1943 steel penny. A nearly pure copper penny (1981 and earlier) is more than one cent's worth of copper. However, it is illegal (federal law) to melt them down. I have a huge jar of pre 1982 pennies and you cannot have any of them.

Hi,My name is Linda and I live in Texas-I have a story about finding pennies. My mother would always pick-up pennies when she was walking or just going shopping. She had a several jars full when she passed away-she told me to never pass up a penny on the ground. She died almost four years ago-whenever I'm out I always look at the ground for those pennies. Now I believe that she throws them down from heaven just for me to find and to always know she is with me. On some of my really rough days I will find one and it makes me feel so much better to know that she is looking down on me and she is always by myside. The year-1968-I never check it-but I do know that '68 was a very good year-I married my friend and sweetheart in August and we are so happy together. Good luck with your quest. Linda

George, saw the article re: penny collection in recent American Profile mag. and it caught my interest. I was born in Lawrence, KS in 1941 at the then Lawrence Memorial Hospital (is it still standing?) My son Steve was born on Oct.11, 1968 in Oregon, so this year is a special one for me. I graduated from Lawrence High School on Louisiana Street in 1959 and worked at Kansas U. until 1962 when I married and moved away. I am now in CA but still a Jayhawk at heart and would love to hear from other Lawrence natives. Will send pennies if and when I find any. Thanks for the site, it is great. BC

It's sad people with nothing better to do than post as "anonymous" have to criticize someone actually creating something of interest. I believe you can filter them if they don't use a name. My brother calls it graffiti, but that slams graffiti artists.

I also just read the article and was fascinated. I was in high school in Florida in 1968. My dad worked at the Kennedy Space Center on all the Apollo missions. I'm also a librarian in Kansas. I wonder why you don't display the collection in the library to generate an interest in history?
